Customer's Own Material

Most Marge Carson pieces are upholstered from the house library of more than 600 fabrics and leathers. Sometimes the fabric a room needs has already been found elsewhere. Customer's Own Material, COM, exists for that: you send the fabric, and the piece is built in it, with the same frame, cushion construction, finish and trims as any other.

How much fabric to send

Every model's yardage requirement is calculated on plain fabric, 54 inches wide, in one continuous length. A narrower fabric, or one that arrives in cut pieces, may need more, and we will ask for it once the fabric has been received. We recommend sending an additional ten percent to allow for pattern matching and the variances of cutting. Yardage that goes unused cannot be returned.

Sending it

Complete the COM Information Form, attach a swatch, and email it with your purchase order to customerservice@margecarson.com. The form carries the receiving address for the factory. Once the fabric ships from your vendor, send us the tracking, the commercial invoice, the packing list and the certificate of origin from your supplier. The fabric cannot be exported to the factory without them, and late paperwork can mean storage fees until it is complete.

What happens at the factory

Your fabric is inspected when it arrives. If we find a flaw, customer service will tell you at once and send photographs, though the fabric cannot be returned to your vendor through us. Unless the order says otherwise, we use our judgement on how the fabric is cut and applied: which side is the face, and which way is up. A pattern that runs up the roll needs a vertical seam on any seat wider than the fabric, and we place those seams where the piece is best served unless the order specifies.

Timing and terms

Marge Carson is not responsible for delays in your fabric's production or shipping, and deposits are non-refundable. A COM order carries a separate tariff surcharge, set by the fabric's country of origin and the tariff schedule in effect at the time of order, which is added to the invoice when the fabric is received.

If the fabric is still to be chosen

The Fabric Library holds every fabric and leather in the house range, searchable by name or number, and each has been tailored on Marge Carson frames before. The showroom in Clarendon Hills has the full range on the floor.

To begin

Add the piece to an inquiry from its product page and note that the fabric will be COM, or request a quote. Trade members will find the current fabric and finish lists under Fabric, Finish and Material Information.
